What are challenges?

Challenges are a mechanism to engage your users in a friendly competition with their peers to see who can take the fewest SOV commutes, most bike trips, etc.  Pair challenges with incentives and you’ve got a terrific engagement opportunity and one that has a particularly strong impact on mode-shift.  The thing that sets challenges apart from other types of engagement opportunities is the competition aspect which can increase the effectiveness of TDM (transportation demand management) programming by leveraging human tendency towards competition.

Creating a Challenge

  1. From the top menu, navigate to ‘Manage’ and select ‘Challenges’. From here you are presented with choices for Current, Upcoming, Past, or All Challenges.
  2. Click on New Challenge
  3. Proceed with filling out each field to configure your challenge. Most fields are self-explanatory or provide guidance on the page itself. However, there are a few sections that require special consideration. These are explained below.
  4. Finally, click the Create Challenge button on the right-hand side to continue.

Users and Network Eligibility

  1. Choose Users/Networks Who Are Eligible - Is this challenge for your top-level network and should include all user's in your Organization?

Yes - choose Select All or your top-level network.

No - choose each subnetwork individually as needed

  2. Choose networks who's managers can run reports on or edit this Challenge - It's important that you think about who manages which networks. If you only have a top-level network, no problem. It gets more difficult when there are location or department sub-networks. If you are not certain how to configure this, please do not hesitate to contact Gohio Commute support.

Trip Log Eligibility

  1. Trip logs must be between the following dates - Select the start and end dates for eligible trip logs. Only trips logged as having taken place on these days will be counted toward the challenge.
  2. Trip Log Entry Cutoff - After the challenge has ended, when is the last available date/time for your users to log their eligible trips?
  3. Archive Date - Users have a Completed tab in the challenges view. When a challenge's active dates have passed it will appear in the users' completed tab until the Archive date is reached. Then it will only be visible in admin views.
  4. Modes - Select all of the eligible modes for the challenge. Hold down the CTRL (Command + click for Mac users) to select multiple modes.
  5. Restrict eligible trips to specific sources? - Sources are the medium the member users to log their trips (e.g. Web Platform, Commute Tracker). Don't select anything if all trip log sources are eligible.

  1. Require Opt-In? - This is selected by default. Read the important information included with this item on the configuration page.  Warning: This setting affects all leaderboards, including networks (users must opt-in to have their logs count towards a network). Once the challenge is created, this cannot be changed.
  2. Send Email upon Registration? - Only when Require Opt-In is selected. This will allow the system to send a basic email to each user that registers for the challenge. Note: Once the challenge is created, this cannot be changed.
